Design for the Visually Impaired
A functional everyday object designed to support confidence and independence
This project focused on creating a practical, discreet everyday object for Silvia, an 80-year-old woman gradually losing her sight. She wanted something that supported her independence without drawing attention to her disability.
I designed a tactile purse with textured slots for each note and coin, allowing Silvia to identify currency by touch. Inspired by braille principles, the design helps her navigate the purse without needing to look. A small bell makes it easy to locate in a handbag, while poppers and velcro replace buttons for easier use. The result is a functional, confidence-building accessory tailored to her needs.
